General List Guidelines and FAQ
Asking for Help
Good help is often had by asking
good questions. Questions like "ASP stopped working, what's wrong" or
"How do I secure my server" tend to get ignored as they are far too
broad. Be sure you provide the following information:
-
The version of IIS you are
using. Specify if it is W2K Pro or Server, NT Workstation or IIS 6,
etc.
-
The EXACT ERROR or
EXACT behavior you are seeing. Bad examples include "My server
stops responding" or "after the upgrade, my application fails."
-
Very often, the first
follow-up help arrives in the form of "are there any Event Viewer
messages?" so provide them if there are any and say there are none
if there aren't. Omissions of the information makes people think you
didn't check and if you did check, then you're omitting important
information.
-
Relevant configuration
details such as "using host headers", "using only Basic
authentication", "content is located on a SANS device.
-
If you need urgent help, use
the IIS Urgent list.
-
If you have attended a class at IISTraining.com,
you can submit a post to IISFastTrackers List at iisfasttrackers@lyris.iislists.com
